What Does it Mean to be a Registered Massage Therapist?
A Massage Therapist is a Regulated Health Professional who has received two to three years of comprehensive training at a recognized school before completing written and clinical examinations, and registering with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.
It means the RMT:
* pays the annual registration fee in order to remain in good standing
* carries a minimum of 2 million dollars personal liability insurance, and renews it annually
* participates in mandatory "Continuing Education" courses, to continually build on their knowledge base
* firmly adheres to the Massage Therapy Standards of Practice and Regulations, provided by the CMTO
* follows the Massage Therapy Code of Ethics
* IS held accountable and/or disciplined if necessary
Bottom line is: Going to a massage therapist that is registered means you will receive treatment from a properly educated therapist, and that you are protected if anything were to go wrong.
Only members of the College are permitted to use the title, Massage Therapist or Registered Massage Therapist or the designation of RMT or MT. All members of the Registered Massage Therapists' Association of Ontario must be registered with the College and are therefore licensed massage therapy practitioners.
